The violin is the melodic companion to the voice.

Held in the South Indian style and played seated, the violin shadows the vocalist, fills the spaces between lines, and echoes the raga's phrases. In the pure-dance (nritta) passages it trades melodic patterns with the ensemble, adding richness and continuity to the sound the dancer moves to.
